Is it best to leverage social networks? Part 2

Social network sites are still driving me bananas...it was January when I first discussed my dilemma, Is it best to leverage social networks, unfortunately I still have not found the holy grail. Flickr is just too public for my taste...I’m afraid I would regret (down the road) putting hundreds of photos of our son the site regardless of how much easier that would make my life. Bill Pearson shares this concern as well as you can see in the comments of my last post. At the same time I still want to add metadata to my photo once and use as few online sites as possible AS WELL AS be able to draw in my content on other sites to this site, ebohling.com. Nat left a comment last time along the same lines and provided an excellent link to Tim Brown’s site. Tim has successfully pulled content from several sources...I think using Yahoo Pipes which I still need to explore more.

Today I am exploring Zenfolio a bit more than I have in the past. Seems to me a much better solution than Flickr; I can upload larger original file sizes AND have greater access control of my images. It just may fulfill my requirements, but I have yet to thoroughly test it. I can say though that Flickr and Zooomr are a bust for me...they may be easy to use and all, but just don’t have quite the control over my photos that I want to maintain.

Anyone have any comments or experience with Zenfolio they would like to share?

update: came across this excellent point of view, Zenfolio Online Photo Sharing Review. I may be up very, very late tonight.

said: It depends on what you want. Many people are looking for the interaction in a photographic sense when they are on Flickr. That's the community that was started out with anyways, amateur photographers, and for them to have access to other people to talk lenses and be appreciated for a shot was the intention. Other use Flickr because it's space saving. Hosting your own content can get spendy after awhile. This is the same reason companies have begun to use YouTube for hosting; cheaper. I am building a site for a friend who is a wedding photographer, and we've had to talk about just these questions. It hasn't been hard to keep the photos hosted and just use Gallery and I'm going to install TiltViewer for him too. Yep. Good quiestions!
